Barnes & Noble is removing 100 DC Comics book titles from their stores after the latest deal between between DC Comics and Amazon. DC Comics announced Amazon will have limited rights to sell the new digital versions of 100 comic books for the new color Kindle Fire, leaving B&N and its Nook Color out in the dark. Miffed, and per store policy of only carrying print books whose digital versions are available to B&N, the store will pull top sellers such as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, All Star Superman, Green Lantern, and the “intellectual comics” Watchmen and The Sandman. They will, however, be available online and through special orders delivered directly to the customer house – no copies allowed instore.
Is B&N being petty? Yes, but digital wars are getting more ferocious and Amazon has positioning itself as Godzilla in everything from household furnishings and electronics to books and music, and even the production of new books and music. The founders of Amazon certainly chose an appropriate name for their company, and with the release of the new Kindles they will be on fire for the holiday season. The color digital versions of the 100 DC comics will be formatted for Kindle Fire and released by Amazon on November 15, the same release date for the Fire.
